Healing Developmental Trauma
What is Complex Trauma/ Developmental Trauma?
Developmental trauma describes the emotional and psychological challenges that can arise when a child goes through difficult experiences during important stages of growing up. These experiences might include things like neglect, emotional or physical mistreatment, unpredictable caregiving, or living in homes where there is conflict. Unlike a single traumatic event, developmental trauma tends to happen over a longer period of time, and can sometimes make it harder for someone to manage their feelings, build healthy relationships, or feel confident as they grow older. However, through therapeutic support and specific trauma focused treatments, people can learn to heal and thrive.
Understanding Trauma through the Lens of Neurobiology
Trauma impacts not just our minds but also our bodies and nervous systems. Advances in neurobiology have shown that traumatic experiences can alter the brain’s wiring, affecting memory, emotional regulation, and our ability to feel safe. My practice draws on this knowledge to help you understand your responses and foster self-compassion. We will work together to restore balance to your nervous system and support your brain’s natural capacity for healing.
The Three-Pronged Approach to Trauma Recovery
Healing from trauma is a journey. I use a three-pronged approach—Stabilization, Reprocessing, and Integration—to guide you safely and effectively through recovery:
Stabilization: We begin by creating safety and stability in your daily life. This includes building coping skills, emotional regulation strategies, and grounding techniques. Together, we ensure you have the resources needed to feel secure before addressing traumatic memories.
Reprocessing: Once you’re ready, we gently process traumatic memories using Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing( EMDR), an evidence based therapeutic modality. This technique helps your brain reprocess and store traumatic experiences in a way that reduces their emotional charge. You will gradually develop new ways of thinking and feeling that reshape how you relate to your past. You will come to view prior events in a new light allowing you to pursue your goals with confidence.
Integration: The final phase is about weaving your healing into everyday life. We focus on integrating new insights, strengthening your sense of self, and empowering you to live more fully and authentically.
